Breaking Down Exciting Nigerian UFC Fighter “Super” Sodiq Yusuff

Sodiq Yusuff Nigeria UFC

The 12th ranked UFC featherweight fighter, Super Sodiq Yusuff responded to a loss exactly the way he should. By dominating veteran Alex Caceres over the course of three rounds en route a 30-27 victory. Now, Yusuff’s professional MMA record stands at 12 – 2 – 0.

The Nigerian-born fighter was coming off a loss to Arnold Allen. A bad case of COVID-19 also meant he has been out of action since April 2021. There were many questions coming into the fight. Some of them included how he would react following his first UFC loss and if he would get affected by ring rust.

Yusuff’s strategy in the fight was simple. Mix in grappling with his striking. This paid dividends towards the end of the first round when he did damage to the lead leg of Caceres. This opened a path to victory for him as he landed over 40 leg kicks. The kicks were very punishing and some of them put down Caceres momentarily.

After the win, Yusuff is looking to move up in the UFC rankings and he called out Bryce Mitchell. Bryce is currently ranked 9th in the UFC featherweight rankings following his win over Edson Barboza. Seeing as they are both coming off 3-round wars, it is unlikely that the UFC will announce a fight between both prospects so soon.

One thing is certain: Sodiq responded to his loss as best as anyone could ask. His loss to fellow prospect Arnold Allen may not be enough to derail his career but he bounced back in style. Who will Sodiq Yusuff fight next? Will he get a chance to move into the top 10 in the UFC featherweight division? Will Sodiq Yusuff be in contention for the UFC featherweight belt soon? Only time will tell. But for now, let’s take a closer look at his skill set.

Sodiq Yusuff Stats and Records

Sodiq currently has 6 wins each by knockout and decision. Four of those knockout wins have come in the first round (4:14 2:14, 0:46, and 0:30). He is 5 feet, 8 inches (173cm), and weighs in at the featherweight limit of 145 pounds. Sodiq was born 19th of May, 1993 in Lagos, Nigeria.

Sodiq Yusuff Striking

Yusuff, a blue belt under Lloyd Irvin, has out-landed all his Octagon opponents except Allen. His significant strikes per minute stand at 5.43 while absorbing only 3.46. He currently has a 48% significant strike accuracy having landed 425 strikes out of 875. His significant strike defense is 59%.

Even though he utilized leg kicks against Caceres, Yusuff has a masterful control of the jab. According to the UFC stats, most of his strikes are to the head. 229 of his total significant strikes (63%) connected to the heads of his opponents. By comparison, body significant strikes were 62 (17%) and 70 (19%) to the legs. In his fight against Caceres, he had 28% accuracy to the head, 18% to the body, and 53% to the leg.

He often leads with the jab which shows his boxing experience. His jabs and follow-up jab feints make him a difficult fighter to deal with at range. Most of Yusuff’s attacks come from his lead side. He likes to throw stabbing jabs, hooks, inside leg kicks, and calf kicks. He doesn’t spend too much time in the clinch and only has 12% of his total strikes from that position.

Sodiq Yusuff Wrestling

Before his fight against Allen, he hadn’t really been tested on the ground. Despite the two takedowns, his takedown defense still stands at 69%. Offensively, he has only landed one takedown out of eight and his takedown accuracy is 12%.

His defensive wrestling is amazing. Sodiq’s range control means fighters can’t easily set up shots on him and helps him deny their takedowns.

The Nigerian-born UFC prospect is just 28-years old. Sodiq has shown improvements every time he steps into the Octagon and has not even hit his fighting prime. A fight against Mitchell will test his wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu in ways it has never been tested before. But if he wins that fight, the sky is the limit for him.

Even without fighting Bryce, there are a lot of exciting fights for him in the division. If Sodiq Yusuff fights Giga Chikadze, Josh Emmet, or Shane Burgos, they will be straight-up bangers! I predicted that Sodiq Yusuff will be the 3rd Nigerian UFC champion and I stand by it. Sooner, rather than later, omo Iya Taye Adire will have his hands lifted as Dana White wraps featherweight gold around his waist.
