JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ian Garry thinks it’s no coincidence that he’s fighting at another numbered event.
Garry (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) impressed in his promotional debut when he starched Jordan Williams in the first round at UFC 268 this past November and will look to replicate his standout performance in another big spot.
The undefeated rising star faces Darian Weeks (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) Saturday at UFC 273 and thinks it was a tactical move by the UFC to have him on such a stacked card. Why? Because Garry sees only two fighters who could ever match his skills on the mic: Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen.
“I’m game, I show up, I fight, I talk the talk, I get on that mic,” Garry told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “There’s only two people that you could argue could talk as good as me, and that’s Chael and Conor. I’m not gonna have any other name on that list, and it’s just natural. It’s just something I’m good at it. You see me walking around in fight week, even when I talk to you guys, it’s just the way I am. I just have a good time, and I f*cking love what I do.”
UFC 273 takes place Saturday at Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.
